The Ottoline Collection, a set of four beautifully illustrated books by Chris Riddell, is a delightful addition to any book lover’s collection. This charming series follows the adventures of Ottoline Brown, a curious and clever young girl who loves to solve mysteries.
The first book in the series, Ottoline and the Yellow Cat, introduces readers to Ottoline and her best friend, Mr Munroe, a small and furry creature who resembles a cross between a bear and a cat. Together, Ottoline and Mr Munroe explore their city, discovering clues and solving puzzles along the way. The book is filled with whimsical illustrations, from the intricate details of Ottoline’s wardrobe to the bustling cityscapes.
In the second book, Ottoline Goes to School, Ottoline and Mr Munroe start a new adventure as they head off to school. But things are not as they seem at the prestigious Alice B. Smith School for the Differently Gifted. As always, Ottoline’s sharp mind and quick wit come in handy as she uncovers the secrets of the school and solves a mystery that has been puzzling the staff for years.
The third book in the series, Ottoline at Sea, takes Ottoline and Mr Munroe on a high-seas adventure. As they set sail on a luxury cruise ship, Ottoline finds herself embroiled in a mystery involving a missing diamond necklace. With the help of some new friends, including a dashing young detective, Ottoline sets out to catch the thief and solve the case.
The final book in this set, Ottoline and the Purple Fox, is perhaps the most thrilling of all. When a rare and mysterious creature is spotted in the city, Ottoline and Mr Munroe are hot on the trail. But the Purple Fox is no ordinary animal – it is a shape-shifter, and Ottoline must use all of her wits and cunning to catch it before it disappears for good.
One of the standout features of the Ottoline Collection is the stunning illustrations by Chris Riddell himself. Riddell is a renowned illustrator and author, and his detailed and whimsical artwork perfectly complements the quirky and imaginative stories. Each page is a visual feast, with intricate drawings that capture the characters’ personalities and bring the story to life.
But the Ottoline Collection is more than just a pretty package – the stories themselves are engaging and entertaining, with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers guessing. Ottoline is a relatable and likeable protagonist, and her friendship with Mr Munroe is both heartwarming and hilarious. The books are written in a style that is accessible to young readers but with enough depth and complexity to keep older readers engaged as well.
Overall, the Ottoline Collection is a delightful series of books that will appeal to anyone who loves a good mystery, whimsical illustrations, and engaging characters. With its charming stories and beautiful artwork, it is a must-have for any bookshelf. Description from the publisher:
Ottoline and the Yellow Cat
Introducing Miss Ottoline Brown, an exceptionally inquisitive Mistress of Disguise, and her partner in crime, Mr Munroe. No puzzle is ever too tricky for the two of them to solve . . .
Ottoline lives in a stylish apartment in Big City with a small hairy creature called Mr Munroe. Together they look after the Brown family's eclectic collections - and dabble in a spot of detective work. So they are the first to the scene of the crime when a string of high-society dog-nappings and jewel thefts hits Big City. Ottoline (who luckily has a diploma from the Who-R-U Academy of Disguise) and Mr Munroe go undercover - and expose an ingenious scam masterminded by furry feline crook, the Yellow Cat.
Ottoline Goes to School
Meet Ottoline and her hairy, helpful friend Mr Munroe. Ottoline is off to the Alice B. Smith School for the Differently Gifted, but she is rather worried that she doesn't have a special gift. Mr Munroe is more worried about the ghost who is said to haunt the school halls at night. Does Ottoline discover her hidden talent, and can they expose the spook?
Ottoline at Sea
Ottoline and Mr Munroe do everything and go everywhere together. That is, until the day Mr Munroe mysteriously disappears, leaving a strange clue written in string . . . Armed with her Amateur Roving Collectors' travel pass, Ottoline sets off on a journey over, under and on top of the sea to find her hairy best friend - and bring him back home.
Ottoline and the Purple Fox
Ottoline and Mr Munroe love puzzles, clues and mysteries. One day, they meet an enigmatic purple fox who offers to take them on a night-time urban safari. The fox shows them all the hidden animals of the city, and Ottoline makes notes on them in her field notebook. Mr Munroe is making notes, too - on the anonymous poems he finds stuck to lampposts on their journey. Who is the secretive poet, and how can he and Ottoline help them mend their broken heart?
