Summary

Axel Scheffler's Flip Flap series is another hit from the award-winning illustrator of The Gruffalo. Are you tired of the same old natural history books? Would you like to share the wonders of the seas, skies, deserts, jungles, countryside and more besides with your child in a fun new way? Scheffler makes learning funny and interactive in these wonderful volumes.

Each spiral-bound hardback book contains twenty-two pages, each split down the middle. On the right-hand side, there’s a drawing of an animal in Scheffler’s much-loved style. On the left, there’s a little two-verse rhyme about it, one on each half, and its name is written vertically across the split. Each book has eleven animals to entertain as well as teach budding young readers.

But the real fun begins when you realise that you can mix and match any top half with any bottom half! You and your child will be laughing out loud as you discover strange new hybrid creatures like the “fab” and the “squolphin” together. Each book has eleven combinations of eleven animals - that’s 121! You’ll laugh your way through the book as you learn more about the real-life animals you’re messing with. The books are a winning combination of poetry, art, and science.

This collection contains the first eight books in Axel Scheffler’s Flip Flap series. That’s 968 animals you can giggle about with your kid - you can’t get better value than that! Each book is packed with full-colour illustrations, and cute and funny rhymes you’ll want to return to again and again.

It’s another hit series from award-winning publishers Nosy Crow, which specialises in high-quality children’s books like this one. Other books you may be interested in include Axel Scheffler’s Farmyard Friends and this Pip and Posy collection.

About the author

Axel Scheffler is an award-winning illustrator of some of the world’s best-loved children’s books. He’s most famous for his collaboration with Julia Donaldson, across books such as The Gruffalo’s Child, Room on the Broom, The Highway Rat and many other timeless classics. Many of them have been made into short films for TV, always retaining Scheffler’s signature style, and have been adapted into theatre and a wide range of other media.

Scheffler was born in 1957 in Hamburg, Germany. He studied at the Bath Academy of Art and Cooper Union in New York, which cemented his desire to become an illustrator. He began as a freelance illustrator in 1986, when he lived in Stretham Hill, and published his first book in 1988. Since then, he’s worked with authors including David Henry Wilson, Roger McGough, Jon Blake and Uwe Timm.

He began collaborating with Julia Donaldson in 1992, and they won the Smarties Prize for The Gruffalo in 1999. The film came out ten years later on Christmas Day and was watched by 9.8 million people on the BBC. Ten years after that, it became an opera, and along the way it has been adapted for theatre, film parks, merchandising and more besides. Donaldson and Scheffler have made twenty-five books together so far.

Scheffler has illustrated over a hundred books. These include toddler books (Pip and Posy), picture books (Sam Who Went To Sea), poetry (Fish Dream of Trees, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats: 70th Anniversary Edition) and books for older children (The Grunts, The Horror Handbook). He’s also illustrated stamps, Christmas cards and a bench. He lives in Richmond, London with his partner, and his daughter.
